The Sixth grade has started the year learning about a wood burning treatment called "Shou Sugi Ban." Shou Sugi Ban is a Japanese technique used to preserve and treat wood. We are using the technique to treat our wooden picture frames. Once the picture frames are completed, we will be using our laser cutter to etch and/or cut images and/or sayings into material that will then be placed into the frames! Check out the student progress!
First, we learned how to use a propane torch to scorch a practice piece of wood:

Once the burning was completed, we went back inside to "brush" the wood with various wire brushes. Students chose which brush to use based on the effect the various stiffnesses of brush would have on the wood. The amount of brushing influences the degree to which wood grain will show in the final staining phase. We used Nyalox brushes to obtain the desired effects.
Next, we stained the burned and brushed wood to see how the stain would appear from each of the techniques used! Check out the amazing colors and effects students achieved!
After practicing, it was time to create the actual frames! Check out how they turned out! Pretty impressive!
Once the staining was done, it was time to sand the backs clean and attach the hardware that would hang the frames and secure the pictures within the frames!
Now that the frames are ready, we are switching to our work on the laser cutter to create the pieces of art that will go into the frames! Stay tuned!
